Why Is Electrical Tape Black? Blame It On The Sun

While electrical tape comes in a rainbow of colors, the most common, by far, is black. Black vinyl tape is used world wide by electrical and maintenance workers for insulating cable and electrical connections.

The primary reason that black is the most common color is that black vinyl tape can be made more resistant to the degrading effects of ultraviolet light.

Since insulated electrical connections may be exposed to sunlight for long periods, black is the color of choice.
