New Tape Adhesives Sound Fishy To Us

We’ve followed the development of adhesives that use the concept of the holding power of the gecko lizard for awhile.  It’s exciting and holds great potential for developing new tapes.

Now, there appears to be some parallel development using another “natural” concept, this one based on a fish called the hitch.

The hitch, also known as the remora, is a “suckerfish” that hitches rides on larger marine creatures like sharks.  This fish has a sucker pad on its forehead which allows it to attach itself to another fish without losing the use of its mouth.

The forehead pad has overlapping ridges that look a little like a venetian blind that can be adjusted, giving the remora just enough suction to maintain its hold on its host.
