New “Gaffers Like” Tape Goes From Rolled To Rigid

measuring tapeThe Rolatube, an invention by British scientists, can be rolled up like gaffers tape and then extended into a rigid material with the strength of steel.  Imagine a measuring tape that starts out as cloth and ends up as steel.

Using carbon fiber composites and thermoplastics, Rolatube can be fashioned into lots of different items that are impractical to carry in their completed rigid form.

Current developments are focused on military applications, allowing soldiers in the field to fabricate things like ladders and antenna masts on site after carrying the component parts in rolled up form.

Uses in space technology and industry are limitless for this amazing new tape.
