Natural rubber, also known as latex, is one of the most common adhesive components and is used on many commonly available tape products like duct tape. It is prized for its holding power and provides good moisture resistance.
Synthetic rubber adhesive (also known as hot melt) is a petroleum based adhesive that performs in a similar manner to natural rubber, but is designed to leave no tape residue on most surfaces. The term “hot melt” comes from the process in which the adhesive is bonded to the tape backing. Synthetic rubber adhesive gives gaffers tape its highly prized quality of not leaving behind adhesive residue.
Acrylic adhesive has characteristics that give it good performance in extreme temperatures and can provide a more permanent bond than natural or synthetic rubber. Acrylic adhesive may need time to “cure” before it reaches its maximum holding power.
