How Masking Tape Works

If you examine a piece of masking tape closely, you will see lots of crinkles or folds.  The tape is not flat like electrical tape or label tape, but rather has texture called “creping”

These folds mean that the tape, when pressed flat, is actually a little larger than it is when it is on the roll.

By placing masking tape on a surface and then pressing it down, these tiny crepes or folds allow the tape to extend slightly in all directions, giving it the ability to keep paint or other liquids from soaking under the tape.
