Synthetic Oils May Help Hold Down Tape Adhesive Prices

Among the class of tape adhesives most valued for a number of characteristics, synthetic rubber, made from oil, is at the top of the list.

A new product called Solazyme, which takes advantage of genetic engineering to create a “green product” with may of the same characteristics as petroleum, may help take some of the volatility out of oil based adhesive pricing.

As the cost and risk of oil exploration continue to increase, alternatives become more and more cost effective, even when development costs are high.

Solazyme uses a process which ferments algae in order to create a product which has the potential to replace petroleum, animal fates and other plant based oils.

Solazyme claims that they are ready to take on chemical manufacturing giants like DuPont and Dow with their new process for creating custom based synthetic oils.

Nitto Denko Makes Strong Move Into Euro Tape Market

Japanese tape manufacturer Nitto Denko, the owner of the Permacel brand, has announced the acquisition of “Bento” (Bento Bantc l k ve Temizlik Maddeleri Sanayi Ticaret), Turkey’s largest tape manufacturer.

Nitto Denko hopes to use this acquisition to drive a projected 250% growth in the European tape market in the next five years.

Tape Adhesive Removal In Four Easy Steps

Any tape can leave adhesive stains on a household surface if it is left in place too long, allowed to get hot, or to get wet.

These steps will remove most adhesive stains.

Gently scrape with a narrow edged blade like a knife or paint scraper, but don’t scrape all the way down to the surface.

Use a clean sponge or lint free cloth moistened with warm, soapy water to gently rub the remaining stain.

Gently scrape again after the soapy water softens the adhesive.

Rinse with clean warm water and wipe dry with a lint free cloth.

If t hat does not work it may be necessary to use an adhesive solvent.

This one works well.

New 3M Duct Tape Claims Clean Removal

3M’s claims that its new Performance Plus duct tape can be removed cleanly for up to six months after applying without leaving adhesive residue.

The new tape also features a backing that is UV resistant so that it will stand up to direct sunlight exposure for up to a year.

This Is No Duct Tape Prom Dress

Our tape-related news feeds are full of stories about high school kids making prom dresses for the big spring event. There is even a tape manufacturer that awards scholarships for the best prom fashions.

Occasionally, we come across tape clothing creations that rise so far above the usual high school projects that we feel like they deserve a special mention.

Fashion designer Esther Boller used off-the-shelf masking tape to fashion her Scholastic Awards competition winning dress. Boller was awared a National Gold Medal for her design work and she claims that the dress is “wearable”.

How Duct Tape Is Made

Manufacturing of duct tape is a complicated industrial process that combines cloth, natural rubber adhesive and a polyethylene coating.

The cloth gives it strength and “tearability”.

The natural rubber adhesive creates a strong, long lasting bond.

The polyethylene coating makes the tape water resistant and gives it its color and shiny appearance.

3M Introduces “Greener” Masking Tape

Green masking tape, one version of painter’s masking tape, the stuff that is supposed to not leave a residue, has been around for awhile.

3M’s “Greener” masking tape is about sustainability, not about the color of the tape.

This new product is made from 56% renewable resources. The adhesive is natural latex rubber and the paper backing is 30% recycled content. 3M is also using a solvent-free water-based manufacturing process.

The tape is available in two versions-utility grade for basic painting and performance grade for professional painters.
